The Concept



Crown is a zine I developed that takes on a poetic tone contrasted with unsettling oral paintings to express my relationship with dental health. The long horizontal format and binding method created an intimate experience for users to take in each page one at a time.

The Process


This project was an appealing way for me to include my paintings in my design work. I did not have enough paintings for the content of my zine so I ideated on more  concepts and accomplished them on varying materials and scales. From there I began production of the zine.

Here is the progression of two pieces included in Crown.




The Solution


Since I began this project during my early exposure to making zines, I did not have a lot of experience with production prior. I was challenged in manually formatting pages to accommodate my printer with heavier paper weights. I also experimented with the binding by using black canvas and PVA glue to create perfect bound copies. Time, patience, and taking notes from my findings allowed me to develop an efficient process.
